On Saturday, June 15, 2024, the streets of downtown Orangeville sang with celebrations as the annual Celebrate Your Awesome festival returned. The community was beaming with pride at this cherished event, which has grown to be such a pillar of the town’s dedication to diversity and acceptance.
In preparation for the main event, the organizers held a fundraising evening in April, named “An Awesome Evening”. This pre-event gathering, which sold tickets at $25, was a way for the community to come together and create anticipation for the June celebration in addition to helping fund it. On the day of, the event started at 1:00 pm, inviting both locals and visitors to enjoy a day of dancing, music, and local businesses’ stands. A variety of activities and shows were chosen by the organizers to highlight the rich diversity of LGBTQ+ culture in Dufferin County. One of the day’s highlights was an interactive dance show by Dance Orangeville and Jonathan Neville, which wowed the audience. This performance highlighted the festival’s dedication to involving community members through different art forms and expressions.
Since its start, seven years ago, the Celebrate Your Awesome festival has grown significantly, which reflects Orangeville’s growing acceptance and embrace of diversity. Recognizing the importance of creating a welcoming environment for everyone in attendance, many local associations and businesses banded together to sponsor the event. To show support for the celebration, Georgian College also encouraged its employees and students to participate in the parade as well.
Social media showed a ton of excitement as people shared their thoughts on the celebration. One local resident tweeted, “Celebrate Your Awesome 2024 was everything we hoped for and more! It’s amazing to see how our little town has embraced this beautiful celebration of love and diversity.” Another community member posted on Facebook, “Celebrate Your Awesome wasn’t just an event, it was a testament to how far we’ve come as a community.
