Since 1995, Mulmur Vista Farm, owned by Bill McCutcheon, has been a cornerstone of livestock innovation in Dufferin County. What began with a foundation flock of Rideau ewes has grown into a thriving operation of 600 ewes and 8 rams, producing as many as 1,500 lambs each year. Lambs are raised to market weight and shipped directly to processors through Ontario’s lamb marketing system, while select ewe lambs are sold as breeding stock.

What sets Mulmur Vista Farm apart is its unique accelerated lambing program—producing a crop of lambs every eight months instead of once annually. This approach, uncommon in Ontario, maximizes productivity while maintaining animal health and welfare. The farm also incorporates Texel genetics, known for their strong maternal traits and heavier muscling, further strengthening the flock.

Sustainability is at the heart of the farm’s operations. By rotating sheep with 153 custom-grazed cattle across 165 acres, the farm improves soil health, manages parasites naturally, and creates pollinator-friendly pastures. As Bill explains, this dual-grazing system not only benefits the land but also reduces reliance on chemical inputs: “We haven’t used chemical nitrogen on our pastures in over three years—our own manure and careful management sustain the fields.”

Mulmur Vista Farm also supports the next generation, employing summer students and welcoming Dutch agricultural interns during lambing season. Beyond the farm gate, Bill serves as President of the Dufferin Federation of Agriculture, representing over 580 members and advocating for the region’s largest industry—food production.

Through innovation, stewardship, and community leadership, Mulmur Vista Farm showcases what “Made in Dufferin” truly means.
