Make training your employees a priority to improve your business goals

There are thousands of reasons to train and develop employees. Changes in technology, new product development or modifications to policies and procedures are all reasons for training. New employees need to understand how your business and processes work. Current employees need to keep their skills sharp for you to remain competitive.

All too often, business owners don’t invest in training for many reasons. You may think it will be too expensive, lose too much valuable time or feel that you may be training your employees for their next job opportunity. As a result, training programs are often overlooked or placed on the “someday” list of things to achieve. You should carefully consider the benefits of training your new and current employees and the benefits it brings to your business. Well-trained employees are proven to be more engaged and feel more loyalty to their employer. These employees can:

  • be the best ambassadors for your company increasing customer service and ensuring that anyone who meets them has a stellar experience
  • increase productivity and think carefully about how they’re doing their work and continually improve processes
  • bring fresh ideas to the table that can increase morale and teamwork
  • save money and time compared to hiring a new employee for a specific role.

You might be thinking, well, this all sounds great, but how do I start?
It’s never been easier or more flexible to get training for your new and current employees. The Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG) provides an opportunity for business owners to invest in their workforce, with help from the government in a unique and personalised way.

YOU pick the training needed. YOU chose the employees who would benefit the most from the training. YOU pick the training provider and delivery method. COJG will provide direct financial support small, medium and large businesses with a plan to deliver short-term training to existing and new employees, and will:

  • provide up to $10,000 in government support per person for training costs.
  • require employers to contribute one-third of the total costs. There will be additional flexibility for small businesses to provide an in-kind contribution towards their share of the costs.
  • require training to be delivered by an eligible, third-party trainer.
