Ryan Hann is a 13 year-old- swimmer with the Orangeville Otters Swim Club and the creator of the ‘Will Swim for Food’ campaign. In 2018, Ryan combined his passion for swimming to help the Orangeville Food Bank. He swam 35 km in a week to help raise money and food for our local food bank. With the generosity of our community, he blew his original goal of $500 and 100 lbs of food out of the water and ended up raising $4005 and over 300 lbs of food. One of the most amazing things to come out of his first year was all of the support from his teammates. They came and swam with him each day helping him achieve the daily 5 km goal. In 2019, Ryan decided to continue the campaign but as part of a team of 12. Together, they are swimming 500 km in one week. Their original goal was $5000 and 500 lbs of food, but again the community has shown an overwhelming amount of support and they have changed their goal to $10,000 and 1000 lbs of food. The campaign won’t be completed until August 24th so we don’t have final numbers at this time. Each team member will be swimming 35 km each for a total of 420 km but asking for help to top them up to 500 km. They are getting laps contributed from their Head Coach, Rob Taylor, Olympians Tera Van Beilen, Brittany MacLean and Paralympian medalist Tess Routliffe. All team members have been working since the launch of the campaign in June 2019 by selling chocolate bars, doing bottle drives and cutting grass to help raise money. To date, through the swim campaign and the Coldest Night of the Year, Ryan has helped raise over $5000. He is hoping to more than double that amount by the end of 2019.
