An Evening Under the Starts – A Marquee Event of the Dufferin Community Foundation | Written by: Camila C.

On a late-spring evening, at the north Mono residence of Joan and Paul Waechter, the fundraiser gala ‘An Evening Under the Stars’ was hosted for the Dufferin Community Foundation. More than 200 community leaders and philanthropists invited to the event began a night of culinary indulgence and charitable giving on Thursday, June 22, 2024. The evening started with a ‘Heads and Tails’ fundraiser game, a popular icebreaker at charity events. Party-goers bought their ‘right’ to play the game by donating a small sum of money and placing their open hand on either their head or their ‘tail’ (also referred to as the lower back). After a coin-flip, the losers had to sit on their chair as they were out of the game and the few who got lucky could remain standing and continue playing until there was only one player left. Last man standing won the first prize of the night: a luxurious three-night stay at a Fairmont Hotel.

After the game, guests enjoyed an impressive buffet dinner served by Lavender Blue featuring a broccoli and cauliflower salad made with locally sourced vegetables. Other offerings included roasted baby potatoes, farfalle pasta with grilled chicken and vegetables in a pesto cream sauce, cedar-planked salmon, and beef short ribs with a rich mushroom sauce. Vegan guests were not forgotten either, with a specially prepared farfalle pasta tossed with grilled vegetables in pesto. The experience ended with a delicious dessert bar, accompanied by coffee and tea service.

As the evening progressed, the excitement built for the live auction, which included an impressive lineup of six unique items. Renowned photographer Adrian Fiebig donated a portrait photography package, offering to capture cherished memories of individuals, families, or beloved pets at a location of choice within Dufferin County. For the gentlemen interested in fashion, Andersson Bespoke contributed a $1,000 voucher towards a high-end, customized suit, promising timeless style and personalized service. Golf enthusiasts had the opportunity to bid on a foursome at the exclusive Pulpit Club. Thrill-seekers were enticed by the Driveteq day at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s Grand Prix circuit, featuring expert coaching by Steve Kent. For those with an appreciation for craftsmanship, stonemason Eric Landman offered three days of his expertise to build up to 20 feet of dry-stone wall. The final auction item was a gourmet experience: a four-course dinner for eight by Lavender Blue Catering, to be enjoyed in the comfort of the winner’s home, complete with wine and staff service.
